1. I’ve been loath to pick up the “Story Grid” Curriculum. Because I hate curriculums. They all sound so smug and preachy and stupid because I’m an artist d*mn it, I should know—

That’s how the inner dialogue can go.

BUT….sometimes the preachy smug stupid people have a point.

Sometimes…I have to admit….they know alot more than me.

And if you get into the material and it comes highly recommended and it seems like it’s going to make your book better… you should probably do it.

At least try to learn something from their process.

Because I care more about my book being technically good and interesting and helpful for you to read than me to be all AVANTE GARDE and CUTTING EDGE and CrEaTiVe and all that good shiii—but nobody reads it—

I care more about you getting the best freaking book i can give you.

And I also want it be creative, don’t get me wrong…maybe just “tested” is the correct word…tested against other methods and processes.

And so i drink down the pride. I gulp down the defensiveness like a hot tea, and it’s actually kind of energizing.

Centering.

Lets see what they guys got.

2. My general rule of thumb on what advice to follow making my art: Genuinely Listen to all the experts—and then make your own decision (and know why you’re making it.)
