The Greatest Virtue: Discernment? (+024)
To do the right thing, in the right place, at the right time, to the right person, with the right intentions, etc. ---> (+) Discernment improvement ideas and a BOOK.6 special release for paid subbers!
1. Maybe you would have chosen: LOVE as the greatest virtue.
It is a great virtue no doubt!
After-all “God is Love.”
But what if our idea of LOVE is distorted? Or it’s applied in the wrong context, at the right time, etc. We can think of a person that is OVERLY loving…we can imagine that. We have seen that.
Acting rightly is complex. Discernment helps you sort through things.
Discernment is something like, knowing how to do GOOD in any scenario.
Discernment is WISDOM. (probably the same thing)
Discernment/Wisdom are meta-virtues.
2. What is Wisdom?
I don’t have a perfect definition because this isn’t a perfect science. But you KNOW what it is deep down.
Wisdom is when you go to your Grandfather, or your Mom, or your Dad, or a Close Friend when things get too difficult to sort through on your own. And you ask them what to do.
Because they have wisdom. They’ve seen it before.
Even if they don’t know exactly what to do, it might be a relief just to be heard and think through it with them. A wise person has that effect.
And if they don’t know what to do, you’re about to get some wisdom of your own.
3. Discernment aligns everything.
Harmony.
Proper Ordering.
Musicality.
Naturally.
That’s the idea. Lining up all the proper elements for a good vegetable soup. A recipe that feeds and nourishes and soothes and feels right.
A family recipe is different than a formula, or an algorithm. Math can get you some of the way there. But there is that extra bit…
That touch.
Everyone can get better at discerning. But this is a feelers game. Some will be better than others and that’s okay.
